State bans sale of bankrupt firm’s travel insurance

A Southwest Florida travel agency says it long ago stopped selling insurance policies from a company under investigation by Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink.

According to the Department of Financial Services, Sink this week notified three travel agencies to stop selling insurance on behalf of Colorado-based Prime Travel Protection Services Inc. and any other unlicensed travel insurer. Prime Travel Protection Services Inc., run by Jerry Watson in Colorado, reportedly filed bankruptcy in January.

Sink issued legal notices to Palm Coast Travel of Lake Worth; Vacation Superstore Network Inc., DBA Best Price Cruises, of Port St. Lucie; and Legendary Journeys Inc. of Sarasota, charging they violated state law by selling insurance for Prime Travel, which is not licensed in Florida to sell insurance. The travel agencies have 21 days from the receipt of the notice to respond.

Reached by phone in Sarasota on Friday, Legendary Journeys Vice President Al Ferguson said his company hasn’t sold Prime Travel Protection policies in six months. “We were getting complaints regarding their repayment schedule for valid claims,” Ferguson said. State regulators were informed, Ferguson said.

Legendary Journeys has offices throughout Southwest Florida, including one in Fort Myers.

Sink’s office said other travel agencies are under investigation, and may be named for selling policies from insurers that aren’t state-licensed.

Travel insurance can protect consumers against costs from unforeseeable circumstances, including trip cancellation, early return and emergency medical needs. Sink advises consumers to get confirmation that the insurer providing travel insurance protection is licensed by the State of Florida (Office of Insurance Regulation) before purchasing the product.

The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to ‘cover it’ in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.

Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!

For some authentic Japanese atmosphere, one tall and one shorter black lantern can be well placed along your winding (never straight!) pathway, or sometimes peeking out from amongst a selection of shrubs and plants.

A small pathway can lead to nowhere, and Zen gardens will always have at least one pathway of either white round gravel or gray flattened gravel wending its way through your shrubs; several glimpses of this pathway will satisfy the unity and harmony requirement of Zen gardens.

Whilst lanterns are more of a Buddhist tradition, they have come to represent the essence of the Japanese garden, so they are also included in Zen designs.

One very large Japanese lantern and one smaller one elsewhere can look effective. These usually come in two traditional styles, one more fat-bellied and squat than the other. They are most commonly found in black or pale gray.

Some of the most inexpensive modern lighting will lend itself to the Japanese mode. The ‘push-in’ mushroom type lamps are very easily assimilated into the Zen garden design.

Rocks and stone are a big feature of the Japanese garden, with different sized rocks grouped seemingly at random. Smaller rocks will look good grouped with your focal point, or added to a bush or plant grouping.

Try to find at least one big rock. If you have one big one, you can group smaller ones beside it and finish off with a fern or two. Stones represent life’s immovable mountains.

Ducati 848: As Prada to Vuitton

The parking lot encircling the hotel was packed, despite it being a weekday. Among a sea of rental fleet specials, a leviathan tractor trailer was parked, taking up four parking slots and the adjacent lane. The Ducati Corse livery, bright rosso paint and the anticipation of what lay within, triggered salivation like a Kobe steakhouse. The Ducati reps greeted us and promptly started offloading the bikes – the new Monster 696, a Hypermotard S and a beautiful, red 848. Wait…no, it’s a 1098, followed by an 848, in yellow. No, that one’s a 1098 also. Which one is the 848? More importantly, which one is mine? My uncertainty is easily apparent, as the Ducati rep catches me peering around the bikes for the side decals; the only way I can discern my ‘middleweight superbike’ from the 1098.

Confusion picking the 848 apart from its larger sibling is understandable and represents both the main point of criticism and praise of it; the 848 is identical to the 1098 in its outer beauty. The 1098/848 are perhaps the most gushed-over bikes to come out of Bologna since the 916. Since the controversy over the love-it-or-hate-it, ‘design exercise’ styling of the 999/749, the somewhat more conventional clothing of the current siblings have that mass appeal that even a non-motorcycle aficionado can appreciate. Whether in red or unconventional white, the 848 is not for introverts: heads will turn and eyes will cast jealous stares in the direction of this Italian stunner.

Criticism of the 848 tends to focus on the fact that it’s essentially a 1098 with a few cheaper components and a smaller engine. Those critics clearly side with the ‘tank is half empty’ argument. Sure, the 848 lacks the traditional dry clutch of its predecessors and its bigger brother, but the wet clutch setup makes for easy modulation and greater durability, as well as a decent weight savings. The ‘lesser’ Brembo calipers may not be as beefy as those on the 1098, but the initial bite is far tamer. To state that the 848 is simply a smaller displacement 1098 is like saying Prada is simply a lesser brand compared to Vuitton. Despite the fewer cc’s. the 848 features an all-new Testastretta Evoluzione powerplant churning out more power than the 749 while shedding weight faster than a supermodel prior to a Vogue photoshoot. In spite of the displacement reduction, the engine is incredibly smooth in its linear power delivery and certainly doesn’t leave its rider in want of more power; if anything, the 1098 chassis feels better suited with the smaller twin for street riding.

The ergonomics of the bike are somewhat misleading. The steeply raked nose and long, narrow tank make the handlebars appear far out of reach of the seating position; combined with the wafer-thin seat and ultra-narrow profile, the Ducati 848 looks about as comfortable to mount as a Philippe Starck recliner. But it’s really not that bad.

Upon straddling the bike, I wasn’t as stretched out as the long profile suggested, and the seat had substantially more give than it appeared. My only complaints stem from certain design elements; the fairing along the trellis frame ahead of one’s knees has a tendency to rub the fairing screws into the tender part of a rider’s shins, and the raked angle of the fairing stay becomes an issue with low speed maneuverings, whereupon fingers are easily pinched between the clip-ons and cowl. The lack of an indicated redline on the otherwise fantastic MotoGP-derived instrument pack induces hooliganism simply to see how high the Testastretta twin will sing.

NEW YORK, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Broadway producers are finding it tough to attract investors for new productions as the global financial crisis begins to take a toll on the Great White Way.

And sluggish tickets sales have caused the closure of shows, adding to the sense of gloom on Broadway.

While several shows traditionally close at the start of the year to make way for new productions ahead of the Tony Awards, more than usual are taking their final bow — 12 shows have finished and another four are due to close by Feb. 28.

The economic turmoil “certainly had an impact on my show and on a number of shows that might have made it through this coming summer,” said producer Margo Lion, whose show “Hairspray” closed on Jan. 4 after more than six years on Broadway.

Several shows could not secure the financing needed to open in the coming months — “Godspell,” “Vanities” and “For Colored Girls” — and producers blamed the economy, said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of trade group The Broadway League.

“It’s not uncommon for shows not to get financing if they’re not sure-fire hits in tough economic times,” St. Martin said. “Even in great times, a lot of shows don’t get financed.”

“Hair” was a hit on Broadway and London’s West End in the 1960s, but Andrew Hamingson, executive director of New York’s Public Theater, which will bring “Hair” back to Broadway in March, said lining up investors for the show was difficult.

“At the time we were out looking for investors for the show it was at the same moment … when all those companies (like Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch) either disappeared or they were acquired by other companies,” Hamingson said.

• FOUR TYPES OF HEADACHES: The main types of headaches are tension, migraine, cluster and hormone.
Tension headaches, the most common, cause a band-like sensation or other pressure around the head. Most migraine headaches occur on one side of the head. Described as the most intense, cluster headaches attack in groups. Hormone headaches are associated with women’s menstrual cycles.

• OTHER TYPES OF HEADACHES: You might also experience over-medication rebound headaches, sinus headaches and those caused by brain abnormalities, including tumors.
• TRIGGERS: Stress, certain foods and sleeping patterns can trigger headaches.
“Eating meals regularly, staying well-hydrated and trying to minimize stress in life, sleeping well and getting exercise really do make a difference,” said Dr. Pamela Blake, a Houston neurologist at Memorial Hermann Northwest.

Changing weather that causes barometric pressure to spike or dip could be the culprit.

“When the fronts are coming in, primarily in the spring and fall, that will trigger headaches in the front of the head or face,”said Dr. Howard S. Derman, a neurologist at The Methodist Hospital. “People sometimes think those are sinus headaches because of spring flowers, but they’re really not.”

Medifast Diet - This diet’s longevity speaks volumes

The Medifast brand has been around for a number of decades, and at one time was only available via physicians. Nowadays the products can be ordered on-line and through a number of distributors.

Medifast offer a stable of meal replacement products - all generally formulated to be low-calorie and low-fat, and containing the optimum levels of vitamins. The formula will generally take users into a mild state of ketosis.

The most popular plan is called 5 and 1. This plan (800-1000 calories daily) comprises 5 meal replacements and one “real” meal containing a lean protein and vegetables and salad. Medifast claim a weight loss of 2-5 pounds per week on this plan.

Proof?

What many people don’t realize is that very few commercial weight loss programs have ever undergone any clinical studies. Medifast heavily promote the fact that a Johns Hopkins university study has shown that Medifast results in significant weight loss (67 pound average loss in males and 57 pound average loss in females). It’s worth pointing out that this study looked at patients who attended Medifast clinics.

There is also an additional study that compared the Medifast program with diabetes medication. The study found Medifast more effective at controlling type 2 diabetes than an ADA-recommended program (see PR).

Both studies were led by Associate Professor Lawrence Cheskin of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and were funded by Medifast .

Successes

Due to the popularity of the program, Medifast have a number of “success stories” - one of which is Nnedi Uzowihe-Igwe of Maryland, USA (currently featured on the Medifast site). She also appeared in People magazine in January 2006 describing a massive transformation that resulted in a 160lb weight loss between June 2004 and April 2005. Nnedi subsequently became pregnant and gave birth to her second daughter)

I was able to find out how Nnedi was going now, and she appears to have maintained her massive initial weight loss (and is aiming to lose the weight she put on with the second baby by the end of this year).

Drastic

Protein fasts and low-calorie meal replacements are a drastic solution, and in my opinion appropriate for drastic situations. Given the choice between gastric bypass surgery or Medifast , then Medifast must surely be a better answer.

The biggest test of a program such as Medifast is the long-term consequences - and in particular weaning off a program based around shakes and soups. The transition phase should be four to six weeks, and often starts off by introducing some oatmeal at breakfast, and some fruit for snacks. Also exercise must become a part of life (5 days a week). Exercise must be fairly low-key during the restrictive part of Medifast - but once transitioning - it becomes increasingly important.

Due to the level of energy intake and exercise levels - it is likely that some muscle loss will occur during the weight loss phase. Once again, the best course of action would be to gradually include strength training during the transition phase - and begin to build up muscle tone.

Costs

The Medifast 5 and 1 plan cost $275 for 4 weeks. However - that’s the cost of the “5? - you will still need to buy your daily “lean and green” meal (lean protein plus salad/vegetables).

Men & Women

Different formulations are used for men and women. Some shakes are called Medifast 55 or Medifast 70. The latter has a higher soy protein content and is more suitable for men (or women who prefer higher protein).

Analyst: Apple could sell a million iPhone gift cards

Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has been checking with his contacts in Apple’s (AAPL) supply and distribution channels and reports that demand for the iPhone is “fairly healthy” in the U.S., Europe and, with the exception of Japan, most of Asia Pacific. He’s anticipating sales of 6 million units for the December quarter (Apple’s fiscal 2009 Q1), down from 6.9 million in Q4 but in line with the Street’s expectations of between 5 and 7 million.

But that significantly understates actual demand for the iPhone, Wu says, because it doesn’t include the wild card in this holiday season’s iPhone sales: the iPhone gift card.

“We think there is strong reception of AAPL’s new iPhone 3G Gift Card program,” Wu wrote in a report to clients Wednesday, “where the process of giving the iPhone as a gift is greatly simplified without the need for activation and personal information. … We estimate several hundred thousand to one million units could be impacted.”

The good news about these gift cards is that Apple gets to collect the revenue up front, which improves cash flow. The bad news for Apple’s Q1 earnings is that it can’t recognize the sale of an iPhone until the customer activates it. “The risk here is that the customer will likely activate post-Christmas,” writes Wu. “Therefore revenue and units won’t likely be recognized until the March quarter.”

In a separate note issued Tuesday, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster took a stab at estimating how many iPhones Wal-Mart (WMT) is likely to sell when it, as reported, begins carrying the devices three days after Christmas. Bottom line: Apple could sell as many iPhones through Wal-Mart in 2009 as it sells through its own Apple Stores.

ACACIA (a-ka’sha). About 1200 species of acacia are scattered through the warm regions of the world. Most of them are shrubs or small trees. Some are matted plants a few inches high. All are thorny and pod-bearing. The tiny sweet-smelling blossoms cluster together in fluffy balls or cylinder shapes. They range in color from deep yellow to almost white. The leaves are usually grayish and fernlike. The acacia is quick-growing and short-lived.
Australia has about 300 species of acacia. The early settlers called them wattles because they used the pliant branches to make wattle-and-daub huts. The golden wattle is Australia’s national Bower.
In the southwestern United States acacias are grown in many parks and gardens. The ornamental species were imported from Australia. The native catclaw (Texas mimosa) grows wild and (Types Of Flowers )is heartily disliked because of its strong hooked spines. The Arizona Indians, however, made meal of the pods. Smaller acacias are eaten by cattle and horses.
Gum arabic is obtained from an African species (see Gums and Resins). The Australians get tannin, used for tanning leather, from the bark of some species and make furniture of the hard, dark “black-wood” acacia. The wood of an Indian species is the chief source of catechu, a dye for true khaki. France grows several kinds for perfume.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter, who is 41, has been getting really bad migraine headaches just before her periods. Is it due to menopause?

Her headaches are not due to menopause. They come from her menstrual cycle, and they’re called menstrual migraines. A migraine sufferer often can identify things that give rise to a headache — foods, alcohol, physical exertion, too little sleep, too much sleep, hunger, bright lights and loud noise. For quite a few women, menstrual periods trigger the headache. The sudden drop in the female hormone estrogen that takes place at the time of a menstrual period precipitates headaches in these women.

Your daughter can take medicine prior to her anticipated menstrual period to prevent the headache. Naprosyn or one of the many other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, taken two days before the period begins, often can avert menstrual migraines. They should be taken for as long as the headache has lasted in the past.

Another approach is birth-control pills. The ones that stop periods for six months to a year are particularly useful. Seasonale and Lybrel are two such preparations.

Most migraine sufferers are aware of the triptan drugs, medicines that have had a huge impact on migraine treatment. There are seven such drugs, and I won’t mention them all. Maxalt and Relpax are two of these drugs. The triptans should be used as the anti-inflammatory drugs are used — two days before onset of periods and continued for the length of the usual migraine.

The 12 days of Christmas plants — poinsettias

This is the second in our series on how to buy and care for the most common holiday plants. Once upon a time, this Mexican native was such a finicky plant that it rarely last much beyond the end of December, if that long.

Boy, have things changed! Now it’s not at all unusual for a poinsettia to look good all the way till Easter.

If that hasn’t been your experience, here’s what you need to know:

In the store, when you’re choosing the plant, look for deep green leaves all the way to the base. Move the foil back at the bottom of the foliage to see if any leaves have turned yellow from lack of light.

If you want the freshest plant available — one, typically, that should last longer because you’re going to give it better care at your home than it received in a big-box store — look at the tiny little yellow buttonlike flowers in the middle of the colored bracts.

If they’re closed or barely open, the plant is very fresh. If they’re missing (having already fallen off), it’s been around a while. See if you can find another.

OK, let’s stop a second here for those of who might be confused by the word “bracts” and who think those little yellow things in the center of all that red couldn’t possibly be the flowers of the plant. If you know all this stuff, skip the next paragraph.

The showy red (cream, pink, yellow, or bicolor) parts of a poinsettia are called bracts. They’re actually there to entice pollinating insects to visit the inconspicuous flowers.

Once you’ve picked the poinsettia you want, make sure that the store gently wraps it up if temperatures are 50 degrees F. (10 C ) or lower. On a cold day, you’ll want to take the plant right home, not leave it in the car while you do the rest of your holiday shopping. Poinsettias don’t respond well to shivery weather.

The first thing to do after you have the plant back home is remove the foil wrapping. It blocks light from reaching the lower leaves and encourages root rot because water collects in the bottom.

Better to put the plant into a cachepot if you want something decorative. There, you can see if there’s standing water in the bottom that you need to pour off.

If you can’t bring yourself to do that, at the very least move the foil back from the base of the plant and poke good-sized holes in the bottom so water can drain out. (Then put the plant n a saucer, of course.)

Place the plant where it will receive at least six hours of bright light daily but not touch a cold windowpane. I know, I know. You bought the plant as a decoration, and it should be on the coffee table or the fireplace mantel, not a windowsill.

But give it light during the day — to keep it happy and looking good — then move it to wherever you like in the evening.

John, 50, branded the football ace a slimy toe-rag after discovering his wife and Ronaldo had sent each other more than 300 text messages.

John claims Olena was using a secret mobile he found stashed in their home.

He says Manchester United and Portugal star Ronaldo, 23, struck up a relationship with his wife in August.

“When I found a telephone at home I saw it wasn’t one of my contract phones that she normally uses. Then I saw it was bleeping and I picked it up and went through the messages,” the Mirror quoted John, as saying.

Traditional Christmas flower in high demand

Legend has it that the poinsettia made its first appearance in the hands of a poor Mexican girl named Pepita who had no gift to present the baby Jesus on Christmas Eve, according to Paul Ecke Ranch, an Encinitas grower that supplies most of the flowering poinsettias in the United States.

Pepita’s cousin, Pedro, told her that any gift given with love would suffice. Hearing this, Pepita created a bouquet of weeds gathered from the side of the road.

But realizing they were a sad excuse for a gift, she fought back tears as she approached the altar where there was a statue of Jesus. As she handed them over, she happened to glance down and see that her weeds miraculously transformed into a red bouquet of flowers — poinsettias.

The legend was recently retold a slightly different way in the London Free Press, which had the young girl grabbing branches from a poinsettia shrub, not weeds. Either way, the poinsettia remains the traditional Christmas flower.

With Christmas less than three weeks away, it’s again showtime for poinsettias — and they are keeping local growers, retailers and decorators busy.

Poinsettias are the top-selling potted flowering plant in the United States, with $181 million in sales last year, up 6 percent from 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

California accounts for 31 percent of the domestic sales for all potted plants.

At Green Thumb International in Ventura, nurseryman Jack Doughty said the most common question he gets from customers is how do you care for them.

“You want to keep them away from too much direct sunlight,” he said. And water them just like a Christmas tree, keeping them “moist but not soggy wet.”

Green Thumb is getting several shipments weekly.

“We go through them like mad here this time of year,” Doughty said.

One of the store’s suppliers is Santa Paula-based Do Right’s Plant Growers.

Owner Dudley Davis recently provided a tour of his greenhouses where about 80,000 poinsettias were growing. He pulled back plastic curtains to reveal what looked like a sea of red velvet.

“We do 85 percent of our production in the traditional red,” he said. The remaining 15 percent consists of five colors — merlot, apricot, marble, polar (white) and miro (a marbling of pink and white).

The season typically begins around Nov. 15. Davis said 10 percent to 15 percent of his crop is sold by Dec. 5.

Many business technology organizations are pursuing green computing, but what does that actually look like? At Honda’s new data center in Longmont, Colo., it entails floors made of recycled concrete, office furniture crafted of reused steel and newsprint, low-flow automatic faucets, motion-sensor lights, energy-efficient servers, outside air for cooling, and an Energy Star-certified roof.

Honda isn’t insulated from the economic pressures squeezing U.S. automakers; its U.S. sales fell 32% in November compared with a year ago. Honda’s green IT push should lead to lower energy costs and other efficiencies, though the bigger impetus is a company-wide commitment to being environmentally friendly, says Jennifer Sepull, CIO of American Honda.

Honda’s 61,000-square-foot data center, which opened in October, is one of a handful of U.S. data centers certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system for green building construction. Honda spent more than $25 million on the data center, a price that included a premium for its green design. Because the facility is only 2 months old, Sepull declined to estimate just how much Honda stands to save in energy costs.

Honda selected building materials based on proximity to the data center’s location and materials that were produced in an “environmentally responsible manner,” Sepull says. And it recycled 73% of the construction waste associated with the project. The company left much of the site undeveloped and replanted trees and shrubs indigenous to the area.

Data center administrators were trained in how to be more energy efficient. For example, they were advised to decommission unused equipment quickly and to use management tools to ensure that servers are optimally provisioned. Honda has found that energy-monitoring tools aren’t up to snuff and that the data they generate needs to be more comprehensive. “They’re just coming on the market,” Sepull says. “We monitor electricity, but monitoring will get more advanced to give us better day-to-day awareness.”

9-year-old Alec Greven actually wrote his book How to Talk to Girls when he was only eight. It started with a school writing assignment where he had the choice to write about anything he wanted. He chose to write about girls. His teacher and principal at Soaring Hawk Elementary School in Castle Rock, Colorado were so impressed, they sold the book at the school book fair. It quickly became the fair’s top-seller.

As buzz about the book grew, Ellen DeGeneres had Greven on her show in February and put him in touch with HarperCollins. They signed him to a contract and released the book on November 25, 2008. You can now buy How to Talk to Girls on Amazon where it is a best-seller among children’s, self-help and psychology books.

A Today interview revealed what inspired the tiny dating guru to write his book. “I saw boys around the playground having trouble getting girls — just not knowing what to say. I wanted to write a book that could help them.”

One of the fourth grader guru’s most talked about tips is to give “regular” girls a chance and avoid riskier, “pretty” girls. He writes, “About 73 percent of regular girls ditch boys; 98 percent of pretty girls ditch boys.” He continues, “It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have big earrings, fancy dresses and all the jewelry.”

He also advises boys to “move on” when life deals them a rough hand. “I had a crush on a girl in preschool. Then my family had to move, so I had to let her wash out of my mind.”

Consumer confidence could hurt new-car sales in final quarter of fiscal year

Bargain-priced “slightly used” cars will become a hot commodity in Canada as price-conscious buyers scoop them up and U.S. car dealers — armed with a stronger currency — prowl the Canadian market for deals.

That’s the prediction from Canadian car-pricing expert Paul Timeoto, who expects a falling dollar to stir the interest of U.S. dealers in Canadian vehicles.

“The prospect of U.S. dealers coming up here to buy is looming very strongly now,” said Timeoto, president of online car-pricing-data firm CarCostCanada.com. “The dollar has only been below 90 cents US for a few weeks so it may take a little while for them to pay attention to our market. But it won’t take long.”

He noted that until recently, Canadian car dealers took advantage of a strong Canadian dollar to buy used cars — less than one year old — in the U.S. and resell them in Canada.

“Dealers went down there and literally brought them back by the truckload and Canadians saved a lot of money that way,” Timeoto said. “But that situation has dried up now and the reverse is likely to happen.”

New vehicle sales in Canada during the first three quarters this year appeared to be heading for a solid year of about 1.6 million sales, but declining consumer confidence in the final quarter could push that figure down.

Statistics Canada said 14,900 new vehicles were sold in B.C. in September, a 10.8-per-cent decline from the same month last year.

Dueck Downtown general manager Greg Keith said used cars are popular with many buyers, but almost everyone wants the newest technology possible because fuel efficiency is such an important factor.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a person to buy a three-year-old car, especially with gas prices the way they are now,” he said. “I drive a new Escalade hybrid full-size vehicle that gets better fuel economy than a lot of mid-sized cars.”

StatsCan said new-vehicle prices in Canada are at their most affordable level now in more than 15 years, measured as a percentage of disposable income. It takes about 19 weeks of disposable income for a typical Canadian household to buy a new car, down from a peak of 25 weeks a decade ago.

Avoid peak travel dates

Western Pennsylvania has a long strange and surprising history with the peculiar institution of slavery. The issue is illuminated at the Senator John Heinz History Center in a new exhibit Free at Last Slavery in Pittsburgh in the th and th Centuries. The exhibit began with this discovery of an oddly marked file found by staff in the Allegheny County Recorder of Deeds office of Valerie McDonald Roberts. story continues below They discovered a folder with the word Negro on it says Vice Chancellor Robert Hill of the University of Pittsburgh. They brought it to Valerie s attention and she discovered that it was a transaction related to children. After digging a little more they found that there were records related to slavery. She turned them over to the history center for preservation. Hill heard about the papers and decided to check them out. They re written in this flowery old penmanship so I got a magnifying glass and went through them Hill says. There were famous names asso! ciated with the transactions names that are on towns and villages and streets in Western Pennsylvania. What are these people doing involved with slavery related activities Isaac Craig owned eight slaves and so on. I said Isaac Craig I work on Craig Street. But I wasn t sure there was a connection. So I started learning about him and Gen. John Neville and others and decided that in addition to putting the papers on display we needed to tell the fuller story of slavery in Pittsburgh. With help from Laurence A. Glasco a professor at Pitt who wrote The WPA History of the Negro in Pittsburgh Hill assembled the exhibit. The papers are the centerpiece but Hill was determined to flesh out the story from a visual re creation of the Middle Passage aboard the slave ships to the stories of Pittsburgh s strong abolitionist communities of whites and free blacks. Hill found that Pittsburgh s awkward extended transition from slavery is largely a product of Pennsylvania s Act for the Gradua! l Abolition of Slavery passed in . Even the Quakers in Pennsylvania originally owned slaves but were among the first to turn against the practice. At the time this was a pioneering act of abolition. But it had a lot of loopholes. After March children born of slave women couldn t be slaves for life Hill says. They would serve a kind of term slavery until age . It was because when the legislation was taking shape just like today the lobbyists were out in force. So the slave lobby said You know these slave kids are a nuisance. They have to be fed clothed baby sat and you can t get any real value out them until they re about . So if you re going to abolish slavery we have to be compensated for the investment we ve put into these children. Sometimes slave owners would escape the law by sending pregnant slaves to the South for the births. And there were always slave catchers active in Pennsylvania looking to take escaped slaves back to their owners. Many free blacks applied for Certificates of Freedom to prove their status. We also wanted to show em! powerment Hill says. This is not purely a woe is me story. We did look for the empowering activities particularly of blacks. Pittsburgh had a large population of free blacks some quite wealthy and influential many of whom were involved in the abolition movement. For these stories Hill drew on a series done by Frank Bolden of the Pittsburgh Courier on some of Pittsburgh s founding black families. The first African American doctor to graduate from an American medical college was David Peck the son of John Peck who was a pretty rich free black in Pittsburgh Hill says. John Vashon had baths back when bathhouses had an honorable pedigree. His son was the the first black graduate of Oberlin College and he graduated valedictorian. He became an abolitionist. These were very rich stories related to Pittsburgh and related to slavery but showed empowerment. One section of the exhibit focuses on slave escapes from the great orator Frederick Douglass to an unknown year old girl who esca! ped her Arkansas slaveholders when they stayed at the Monongahela House Downtown. At the time it was Pittsburgh s most elegant hotel and staffed by a large number of abolition minded free blacks who helped the girl disappear. The exhibit includes advertisements for slaves in the Pittsburgh Gazette. But the paper eventually dropped the ads and then turned strongly against slavery. Anti slavery also was one of the major planks of the new Republican Party s platform which chose Pittsburgh for its first national convention in . For these and other reasons Hill thinks Free at Last has a much broader appeal than it might appear to at first glance. This is not just African American history. This is Pittsburgh history and Pennsylvania history and American history Hill says. When you talk about the Republican Party being formed out of the sentiments against slavery . when you talk about the party being established here and ultimately electing a president that plays the leading role in ending slavery that s huge. S.Africa rand recovers vs dollar

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa’s rand recovered some ground against the dollar on Thursday after a battering overnight that took it to new 6-1/2 year lows, but generally remains on the backfoot as global economic worries hit markets.

At 0637 GMT the rand traded 2.08 percent firmer at 11.32 against the greenback, compared with Wednesday’s close at 11.56 in New York. The local currency went as low as 11.88 against the dollar overnight, its weakest level since March 2002, Reuters data shows.

The rand’s latest gains were due to some profit taking after its heavy losses overnight and in Asian trade earlier on Thursday, a Johannesburg trader said.

“But it still looks quite horrible. There’s lack of liquidity, especially during New York trade, although it seems as though during local (Johannesburg) time we have two-way flows,” the trader said.

“All emerging market currencies are under immense pressure. To be honest it can go any way, but we’re still of the view that there could be some more rand weakening.”

Government bonds were also firmer, and yields fell in turn. The benchmark 2015 bond yield dropped 6.5 basis points to 9.89 percent, while that for the 2036 note was down 7 basis points at 9.215 percent.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed categories of drugs worldwide in the treatment of pain and inflammation in many conditions.

NSAIDs are used primarily to treat inflammation, mild to moderate pain, and fever. Specific uses include the treatment of headaches, arthritis, sports injuries, and menstrual cramps. Aspirin is used to inhibit the clotting of blood and prevent strokes and heart attacks in individuals at high risk. NSAIDs also are included in many cold and allergy preparations. Two drugs in this category, ibuprofen and naproxen, also reduce fever.

Uses

NSAIDs are usually indicated for the treatment of acute or chronic conditions where pain and inflammation are present. These drugs also are effective in some neuropathic pain syndromes when used with other analgesics. NSAIDs are generally indicated for the symptomatic relief of the following conditions:

Rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Acute gout
Inflammatory arthropathies (e.g. ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome)
Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation)
Headache and migraine
Postoperative pain
Mild-to-moderate pain due to inflammation and tissue injury

Arylalkanoic acids: diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam), indomethacin (Indocin)
2-Arylpropionic acids (profens): ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), ketoprofen (Orudis, Oruvail), naproxen (Naprosyn, Alleve), carprofen
Pyrroles: ketorolac (Toradol)
Enolic acids (oxicams): piroxicam (Feldene), meloxicam (Mobic)
Sulphonanilides: nimesulide
Napthylalkanones: nabumetone (Relafen)

Mechanism Of Action

NSAIDs work by suppressing the production of fatty acids called prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain. They do this by blocking the action of an enzyme, cyclooxygenase (COX). This enzyme is responsible for converting precursor acids into prostaglandins.

In the periphery NSAIDs work by decreasing the sensitivity of the nociceptor to painful stimuli induced by heat, trauma, or inflammation. In the central nervous system, they are thought to function as antihyperalgesics and block the increased transmission of repetitive incoming signals to higher centers. In effect, they modulate perception of pain caused by repetitive stimulation from the periphery.

Differences Between NSAIDs

NSAIDs vary in their potency, duration of action, and the way in which they are eliminated from the body. Another important difference is their ability to cause ulcers and promote bleeding. The more an NSAID blocks Cox-1, the greater is its tendency to cause ulcers and promote bleeding.

Choice of NSAID for chronic and disabling inflammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis is governed by age, diagnosis, degree of severity, relative gastrointestinal safety, tolerability, and relative efficacy in the given clinical situation. It is a common misconception that all NSAIDs are therapeutically equally efficacious and any one of them could be used for the given indication. Use of multiple NSAIDs should be discouraged. An agent with comparatively less gastrointestinal (GI) side effects like ibuprofen and diclofenac should be preferred in place of indomethacin, piroxicam, or naproxen, which are more gastrotoxic. In conditions where diagnosis is uncertain, the medicine should be empirically chosen and given for a week or so and if the response is adequate it should be continued until side effects mandate its withdrawal. Ankylosing spondylitis responds better to a particular NSAID like indomethacin. It is probably related to its stronger inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Aspirin is a unique NSAID, not only because of its many uses, but because it is the only NSAID that is able to inhibit the clotting of blood for a prolonged period (4 to 7 days). This prolonged effect of aspirin makes it an ideal drug for preventing the blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes. Most other NSAIDs inhibit the clotting of blood for only a few hours.

The major NSAIDs of potency comparable to opioids are diclofenac and ketorolac. Moderate postoperative pain, for example, may be managed using these agents. The overall analgesic effect of 30 mg of ketorolac is equivalent to that of 6 to 12 mg of morphine. Efficacy has been demonstrated for postsurgical pain including oral, orthopedic, gynecologic, and abdominal procedures. Efficacy for acute musculoskeletal pain has also been shown. Ketorolac causes ulcers more frequently than any other NSAID and is, therefore, not used for more than five days.

Naproxen provides effective relief in acute traumatic injury and for acute pain associated with migraine, tension headache, postoperative pain, postpartum pain, pain consequent to various gynecologic procedures, and the pain of dysmenorrhea.

New software is enabling graziers to track their animals with their mobile phone.

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin says “quick-thumbed livestock owners” can now exchange National Livestock Identification Scheme information with the NLIS database, following the launch of the new mobile phone application software.

“This new software, ‘NLIS Express’, can be easily loaded onto compatible mobile phones - providing a new way to quickly capture and transfer NLIS data,” Mr Mulherin said.

“It is going to be very useful to a lot of sectors within the livestock industry.”

Biosecurity Queensland Principal Project Officer Michael Lancaster said training would be provided to graziers in coming months.

“The training will be available to anyone who uses the NLIS database, but we also see it being of particular interest to agents,” he said.

Agent Dan Sullivan, from Sullivan Livestock in Gympie, is one of the first people in Queensland to use the new software.

Mr Sullivan said he uses NLIS Express to transfer data directly to the database on behalf of clients.

“With NLIS Express I can provide a transfer service to our clients - often while I’m still at their property,” he said.

“Often, I’ll know if the transfer has been completed before I leave the property and this has removed the need to come back to the office, freeing up my time to continue on with other business,” Mr Sullivan said.

The application was developed by MLA and is made available at no cost.

And nowhere are they clearer than gold.

Gold is both a storehouse of value and a commodity. However it is the latter quality that has dominated gold trading recently as investors dump the precious metal along with soybeans, copper, and other commodities.

But gold isn’t really a commodity; not like sugar or coffee, anyway. Gold doesn’t have a utilitarian purpose-other than jewelry which is dubious in its usefulness. No, gold is a currency. It is a storehouse of value.

But tell that the droves of lemmings pushing it down along with nickel, wheat and the like. Gold has fallen nearly 10% from $820 to $740 in the last two weeks. And it’s done this at a time in which economic announcements have been HORRIBLY dollar negative.

Consider that the US Treasury just put us all on the hook for several trillion dollars’ worth of liabilities with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As you know, the two mortgage giants have more than $5 trillion in mortgages on their balance sheets. They’ve already admitted roughly $1.2 trillion of this is in subprime or Alt-A mortgages. If these firms are anything like their troubled financial brethren-Merrill Lynch or Lehman-chances are they’re understating the real trouble.

Security experts think it could be, particularly if it’s a smart-phone, a handset that has a full operating system and can run applications much like a desktop computer. The more that phones can perform the same functions as PCs, the greater the chance they will have similar vulnerabilities, experts say.

“I’d put it in the looming threat category,” said Natalie Lambert, a senior analyst who covers mobile security issues for Forrester, a technology research firm. “There’s huge potential.”

But experts caution that consumers should put that potential threat in perspective. Other security issues — such as simply losing a phone — are arguably of more concern to mobile phone users today.

“It’s still very early in the game,” said Chris Hazelton, director of mobile and wireless research at the 451 Group, a technology research firm.

Still, phones are indeed vulnerable to the same types of security threats that face PCs. Security experts have so far identified about 500 viruses or other types of malware or security vulnerabilities that target mobile phones.

Perhaps the best known handset virus is Commwarrior-A, a piece of malware identified in 2005 that spread to phones using the then-current version of the Symbian operating system via text messages. But the number of pieces of mobile malware detected since then has grown steadily.

Analysts say there all kinds of ways that mobile malware could make mischief. Hackers have already induced phones to exchange text messages with rogue operators that charge a high per-message fee. Security experts worry hackers could soon use the GPS feature built into many phones to track the location of their owners.

South African President Mbeki to quit

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) — South African President Thabo Mbeki agreed Saturday to resign, clearing the way for his longtime political rival, Jacob Zuma, to run for the office next spring.
Mbeki has been South African president since 1999.Mbeki plans to meet with his Cabinet on Sunday to discuss his decision, and some Cabinet members might leave in a show of solidarity.

The president made no public comments, and it was unclear when his resignation would take effect.

Gwede Mantashe, secretary-general of the African National Congress, announced at a news conference earlier in the day in Johannesburg that the party — which Mbeki has been involved with since his teens — had asked him to leave before his term was up.

Mantashe said the ANC made the decision “for the citizens of South Africa, so there could be stability within the country” and so the ANC movement could remain “stable and unified.”

“The reaction of President Mbeki to the news, in my own view, was normal. He didn’t display shock or any depression. The party’s request to Mbeki came after a judge on September 12 threw out the corruption, fraud and racketeering case against Zuma, calling it invalid and accusing Mbeki’s government of political interference in the case.

Political observers doubted that would happen because of Zuma’s popularity with the Communist Party and trade unions.

Zuma had been facing at least 15 years in jail if convicted of accepting bribes from a company that got a contract in a multibillion-dollar arms deal.

Kenyan mobile phone provider to upgrade network

Mobile phone operator Zain Kenya has commenced a two-year, 25 billion Kenyan shilling (US$366.3 million) expansion program with an initial investment of 3 billion shillings to upgrade its network.

The upgrade, expected to be implemented in the next three months, will improve the quality of communication in rural and high-traffic areas, said Rene Meza, Zain Kenya managing director.

“Zain customers are enjoying the widest mobile coverage in Kenya, with more than 85 percent of the population covered, and we want to continue offering the best mobile services and strongest network,” Meza said.

“Zain will upgrade its IT system and data services,” he added. “Data services are a key aspect in the communications sector, and Zain would like to be at the forefront in driving data revolution in Kenya.”

The company also plans to re-launch Sokotele, a local electronic money transfer service that has not yet received much publicity. Sokotele will be expanded into an international banking facility, covering up to 15 countries, within the next three months, Meza said.

Copper for delivery in three months slid as much as 3.4 percent to $6,980 a metric ton in London, heading for a second weekly slide as crude oil tumbled and the dollar climbed against the euro, eroding demand for investments in raw materials. Nickel, lead, zinc and aluminum prices also dropped.

Liberty International Plc (LBT SJ) dropped 1.90 rand, or 1.4 percent, to 130.10, the lowest since Aug. 25. The largest owner of shopping centers in the U.K. was rated “sell” in new coverage at Societe Generale SA after gains last month.

Oceana Group Ltd. (OCE SJ) climbed 40 cents, or 2.1 percent, to 19.70 rand, reversing yesterday’s loss. South Africa’s largest fishing company by market value said annual earnings per share rose between 40 percent and 55 percent from a year earlier.

Peregrine Holdings Ltd. (PGR SJ) fell 25 cents, or 1.9 percent, to 12.86 rand, the steepest drop since Aug. 20. The financial-services company which owns South Africa’s largest single strategy hedge fund manager said first-half earnings per share excluding one-time items will be lower than a year earlier, without giving an earnings range.

Chicken and Sweet Corn Soup

Ingredients:

1 Chicken Leg or Breast
1 tsp Light Soy Sauce
Dash of Pepper
Dash of Sesame Oil
300ml Chicken Stock
1 tin Cream Style Corn (about 400g)
1 Tbsp Light Soy Sauce
1 Egg, beaten
2 tsp Cornflour mixed with 2 Tbsp Water

Method:

Remove the skin & fat from the chicken. Cut into thin strips.
Marinade chicken with the seasoning ingredients*.
Heat up chicken stock and creamed corn in a large pot. Add 1 Tbsp light soy sauce.
When hot, add in beaten egg and stir gently, so the egg cooks in strands.
Add cornflour mixture to thicken.
Divide the soup into individual bowls.
Heat up non-stick frying pan. Stir-fry chicken strips until cooked.
Scatter a few strips of chicken over the surface of each bowl of soup.
Serve.

With what seems like a lot of cash in your bank account or the knowledge that it will be on its way there soon, the temptation to whine the entire amount on a top of the range computer or the latest in home entertainment equipment is huge.

But with the majority of graduates starting out in their working lives deep in debt, this is not a wise move. Even if you are lucky enough to have a grant or scholarship, there is a very high likelihood that it simply is not enough to see you through college and so you’ve had to take out loans as well. And you will have to pay back your loans,with interest, even if that seems a big way in the future. So what can you do to avoid being flat broke by Christmas?

Work out how much you actually need before Christmas for hole, bills, food and other essentials, add in something for entertainment and stick the rest in a savings account, with the highest rate of interest you can get. Not much, these days, granted, but outstrip than nothing. Don’t touch this account before Christmas, except in dire emergencies, such as illness or starvation.

If you don’t already have your own computer, use the computers provided by the college. Many disciple will already have their own personal computers or laptops and so there should be enough on campus to go around. If not, find out what times of the day or week they are used least and do your work then. It’ll probably be early mornings, example evenings or weekends.

Family May Sue MBTA After Welfare Alert WBZ Boston

After an all out search to find a little girl on the T one local family says they might sue the MBTA after she was found safe. The girl was riding the T with her dad last week when another passenger became suspicious of their conversation and their behavior. MBTA police responded by releasing a photo and asking the public to help identify the man to make sure the girl was OK. It was the family that came forward. The girl s father Aldert Gouw said he s embarrassed and angry. Police say they were concerned about the welfare of the child raising the question of when does protection start and privacy end. One person I know came into the store and said Turn on your on TV. You re wanted for kidnapping a kid and I said What Gouw explained. Gouw had no idea everyone was looking for him. His grainy image was being plastered all over the news. Riding a bus with a child a woman thought he was suspicious and she reported him to Transit police saying he was holding a little girl s hand t! ight with one hand and a suitcase with the other. The woman also said he was ignoring her pleas for her mother and for food. I immediately flipped out when I saw the alert that MBTA police were looking for him and my daughter and they showed them on the bus said Nathile Hern Gouw. The Gouws called police and told them they were the focus of their search and that little girl in the photo was their year old daughter. Aldert Gouw said his daughter never said she was hungry on the bus and he never told her to be quiet. Police questioned the couple privately and then publicly said it was case closed. He was inconvenienced momentarily because we wanted to check on the welfare of the child the MBTA chief Paul MacMillan said. Aldert Gouw a convenience store assistant manager says he wasn t inconvenienced. He said he was humiliated and now has hired an attorney and is thinking about suing. I can t stay in the store anymore. I ll have to move out of there because people keep looking ! at you and they only remember the bad things he said. I can move away so I can start all over again. Things to consider with this case there were no reports of any missing children and if there was such urgency in finding the child why did police wait two days to get these alerts out This is irrational negligent behavior on behalf of the police department no question said defense attorney Joseph Chancellor. The MBTA said it hasn t issued an apology to Gouw. We don t feel like we did anything wrong MacMillan said. We erred on the side of caution and we think we did the right job.
